PMA alumnus shares his martial law story: TO THE MILLENNIAL WHO MIGHT BE LISTENING TO ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE STORY

To commemorate the declaration of Martial Law, some netizens shared their own experiences, sentiments and insights about the controversial past, which others call the dark chapter in the Philippine history.

Netizen named Buddy Resurrection, a Philippine Military Academy (PMA) alumnus shared a very insightful concept of what martial law is, and in a way, to share the other side of the story.

His complete Facebook post reads:

TO THE MILLENNIALS WHO MIGHT BE LISTENING TO ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE STORY:

1. The concept of Martial Law is not a bad thing. It was placed in the 1935 Philippine Constitution for a reason. You cannot call our forefathers stupid for giving the President the power to suspend certain rights of the citizens in order to protect the country from forces who want to unseat the duly elected government through a rebellion.

2. There was a rebellion in 1972 that wanted to remove Ferdinand Marcos and replace our democratic system with communism. If you think we are now under a dictatorship, do some research about how communist countries are being run. Find out if the people in China or the Soviet Union or the Eastern European countries then had the same freedoms that you now enjoy. THAT was the system the Communist Party of the Philippines wanted to put the country under.

3. The early years of Martial Law were some of the best years of our country. There was discipline, there was peace and order. People felt safe and secure. If you followed the law, you had nothing to worry about and you could go on about your life normally.*

4. Which brings us to this truth: THE PEOPLE WHO NOW COMPLAIN ABOUT BEING ABUSED, ABOUT HAVING THEIR HUMAN RIGHTS CURTAILED, ABOUT BEING ILLEGALLY DETAINED ARE THE PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT AND TURN US INTO A COMMUNIST STATE!

If you look at it this way, are they still fit to be called heroes? Yes, they were resisting a dictatorship but that dictatorship was preventing us from becoming Communist! Which then was for the greater good for the Filipino nation: Their human rights or the survival of our democracy?

5. The later years of Martial Law was a mess. This much is true: power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Never again? Think again. We might be living in a Communist state today if Marcos didn't declare Martial Law in 1972...
