Sen Lacson defends Duterte: having rescued victims, their lives more important than culprits' rights

Following the controversial line of President Rodrigo Duterte in his State of the Nation Address last week, in which he separated human rights with human lives, " Senator Panfilo "Ping" Lacson made a statement defending the President from criticisms, adding that under the right circumstances, the statement makes sense.

"When PRRD said he thinks of human lives more than human rights, I also thought the same in my previous life. When we were rescuing kidnap victims, it was human lives first and foremost. A poor second was the kidnappers’ human rights."

The statement was from Duterte's speech, wherein he told human rights activists that they cannot sway him to discontinue with his war against illegal drugs.

"If you think that I can be dissuaded from continuing this fight because of demonstrations, your protests, which I, by the way, find misdirected, then you got it all wrong. Your concern is human rights, mine is human lives," Duterte said.

"Human rights, to me, means giving Filipinos especially those at the society's fringes, a decent and dignified future through social and physical infrastructure necessary to better their lives and freedoms," he added.

Besides the support from his colleagues, Duterte also has faced criticism from the same.

On July 24, Vice President Leni Robredo countered what she deemed was an erroneous statement, saying that there is no difference between human rights and human lives.

"Kung kayo pinaglalaban niyo iyong human rights, ako iyong pinaglalaban ko iyong human life.' Hindi tayo sang-ayon doon kasi di ba iyong karapatang mabuhay, iyon iyong pinaka-pangunahing karapatang pantao?" Robredo said.

"Hindi naman iyon magkasalungat, hindi naman iyon magka-kompetensya. Para sabihin na pinapahalagahan iyong human life pero iyong human rights hindi, mali yata iyon," she added.

How low can you go? Maria Ressa resorts to headline shaming, disses ABS-CBN article

Photo from ABS-CBN News In a tweet posted Saturday (August 3), Ressa dissed her former employer, ABS-CBN, for posting an article online with a subhead “that is Rappler’s headline.” “Here’s an example of glass half-empty, half-full. The ABS story ran a sub-head that is Rappler’s headline. What headline would you have used?” she said, posting links Rappler and ABS-CBN’s articles. The title of ABS-CBN’s article read: “SWS: Most Pinoys find freedom of speech ‘very strong’ under Duterte.” The subhead was as follows: “But half of Pinoys believe printing, broadcasting anything critical vs gov’t ‘dangerous’” Meanwhile, the title of Rappler’s article read: “Majority of Filipinos think it’s dangerous to publish anything critical of Duterte admin” It’s unclear why Ressa is making a fuss out of the subhead of ABS-CBN’s article when its angle was completely different from Rappler’s. She must be in the mood to proclaim that Rappler is superior over other media entities. ...

China dialing back virus conspiracy claims, US says

© SUMY SADURNI  Chinese embassy officials help screen incoming passengers for the new coronavirus as they arrive at Entebbe Airport in Uganda on March 3, 2020 China has retreated from spreading conspiracy theories online in the developing world alleging US involvement in the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic after finding limited traction, a US official said. The State Department's Global Engagement Center, which is in charge of analysing and countering foreign propaganda, said China has shifted to praising its own successes in containing the virus and highlighting its delivery of aid abroad. "We assess that the PRC official messaging in Africa shows that they may have abandoned that disinformation campaign specifically saying that coronavirus had originated in the US," said Lea Gabrielle, the coordinator of the centre. "We're also seeing something similar in the Western Hemisphere," she told reporters. She said that analysis of Chinese go...
