Propagators of “fake news” will be summoned by the House Committee on Public Information after the 30th Southeast Asian Games is over.
Kabayan (Kabalikat ng Mamamayan) Party-list Rep. Ron Salo said “concerted, deliberate, organized, and seemingly malicious disinformation campaign in the media” undermined the country’s hosting and discredited organizers and the country itself.
If found guilty, the fake news authors can be held criminally liable, Salo added.
“I will investigate fake news being propagated either in the social media or the traditional media,” Salo said on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) belied reports that their Muslim athletes were served pork.
A spokesperson for SNOC said their chef de mission, Juliana Seow, did not talk to Philippine media about it.
“Juliana did not speak with the Philippine media nor were our Muslim athletes served pork,” said the spokesperson.
Reports indicated that Seow told Philippine media that they were forced to order food from outside for their Muslim athletes, who were served kikiam, a kind of pork roll which later turned out to chicken sausage.
“What’s more important is to work with the organizers to address and resolve them (problems), so that our athletes and officials can compete in a conducive environment,” Seow said in an earlier statement.
“We appreciate the efforts and hospitality of the Philippine organizers and volunteers in taking care of us and doing their best as hosts, and look forward to an exciting 2019 SEA Games.” (With a report from Channel News Asia)
